Provided field conditions are safe, rugby players practice & play in the rain!
Unless a club has established its own specific inclement/severe weather policy, a club generally follows the inclement weather/severe weather policy of its local school district.
If local public schools are closed, or if school is cancelled or closes early due to severe weather, then that day's match and/or practice is cancelled.
The safety of players, coaches, and spectators is paramount!
If lightening is seen, practice/play will stop and everyone will be instructed to take appropriate safe shelter. Practice/play may resume if no lightening has been seen for thirty (30) minutes and coaches deem it safe to do so.
At the approach of a severe storm with the potential for tornados, practice/play will stop and everyone will be instructed to take appropriate safe shelter. Practice/play may resume when coaches deem it safe to do so.
The Virginia High School League (VHSL) LIGHTNING SAFETY REPORT http://www.vhsl.org/files/pub-handbook-policymanual.pdf provides useful information and guidelines for mitigating the lightning hazard.
Playing fields in Virginia are in short supply and in constant use. It is in the interests of all players, coaches, and spectators, regardless of sport or affiliation, to respect the fields and to take care of them.
If the authorities have closed a field or common sense suggests that playing on a field would likely result in damage to the field, KEEP OF THE FIELD!
