Format

FORMAT OF THE 2012 SPRING YOUTH SEASON

Consistent with the Competition Rules and Spring Youth Modifications, The 2012 Spring Youth season will be conducted as follows:

U15

A Competitive, 9-week, “Head-to-Head” matrix season (play each Club once).

Each Team will play (6) Matches, and have (1) “Bye” weekend.

Season: 3/24, 3/21,  Easter OFF, 4/14, 4/21, 4/28, *5/5, *5/12.

Matches are (for the most) part ‘synched’ with the High School schedule (same day), *except 5/5, 5/12 and End-of-Season tournament.

U13 age grade players may play “up”, but SHALL be identified on the Game Day Roster.

Two brackets for U15 will be established for the End-of-Season tournament:

  • top (4) seeds from the matrix season will play for the Championship via double elimination (ranking 1-4);

  • bottom (3) seeds from the matrix season will play a round-robin to determine 5-7 ranking.

U13

“Friendly”, 9-week, “Head-to-Head” season (play each Club once) in conjunction with (either preceding, or after) the respective U15 matches.

Clubs with a greater number of U13 players augment the team with fewer players, and play “friendly” matches with a balanced number of players.

Intent is to:

  • 1st — Provide an opportunity for U13 players to play against opponents of same age grade (12 year olds & younger), while introducing them to 15/side, rugby union.

  • 2nd — Play “15-man” rugby with an established Pack & Backline.

Number of players may be adjusted or balanced based upon the Competition Rules & Spring Youth Mods and agreement between Coaches, as determined during the preceding game’s “handshake” (normally 3 days prior) of forecasted game day availability of U13 players.

A competitive U13 bracket WILL NOT be included in the End-of-Season Tournament. However, sufficient games will be scheduled (not to interfere with the U15 bracket) during tournament to allow ALL available players an opportunity to play as much as possible (potentially 3 games, minimum) — within the 140 min. max/day guidelines.

All Rugby Virginia Head Coaches of Spring Youth Rugby will be USA Rugby Certified.
