Dear Friends; I’d like to welcome you to the 2009 Coventry Commonwealth Games of Virginia. We are very excited to have all of you here, and hope that you enjoy a weekend of spirited competition. We are extremely proud to host the Rugby events of the Commonwealth Games here in Fairfax County – it is a testament to the importance of youth sports activities that we believe are vital to the development of our youth and future leaders. I would also like to acknowledge and recognize the hard work of the volunteers and leadership of SYA and Rugby Virginia for hosting and supporting the Games this weekend. Thank you for all you do – the Games would not be possible without you and your efforts. To all of the players, I wish you every success on the field; your commitment to competition and fair play is a quality that will serve you well in this tournament, and future challenges in life as well. To all of the coaches, as a youth sports coach myself, I understand the important role sports have in the establishment of character, discipline, and leadership in our youth - I applaud your efforts and endeavors. To all of the spectators I hope that you enjoy watching our youth participate in what will be a memorable weekend for all of us. Most important of all please have fun. ROANOKE, VA March 20, 2009 Virginia Amateur Sports (VAS) organizer and founder of the Coventry Commonwealth Games is proud to announce the entry of a new sport into this year’s Coventry Commonwealth Games. The Rugby Virginia Youth Rugby Tournament will be held on the weekend of August 1-2 at Hooes Road Park in Springfield, Virginia. Managed by Frederic Bardot, Executive Director of Rugby Virginia, this new addition to the Games promises to be an exciting and successful event. The 2008 two-day tournament saw over 30 youth teams compete in tag and contact rugby in U-9, U-11, U-13 and U-15 divisions.
Rugby Virginia is a non-profit organization dedicated to the growth of boys and girls high school and youth rugby in the Commonwealth of Virginia, while promoting an atmosphere consistent with the values of the game. Virginia Amateur Sports (VAS) is a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization based in Roanoke, Virginia. The organization is governed by a board of directors made up of 21 members from localities across the Commonwealth. The VAS mission statement is: To promote awareness and benefits of physical fitness and health lifestyles through sports education, anti-drug and wellness programs and sports competition. VAS directs more than 10 events a year, including the Coventry Commonwealth Games of Virginia. The Coventry Commonwealth Games of Virginia, known throughout Virginia as Virginia’s Olympics, is the largest multi-sport festival held in the state each year. VAS is a member of the National Congress of State Games (NCSG) and is sanctioned and recognized by the NCSG, the Virginia High school League (VHSL), the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) and by the United States Olympic Committee (USOC) as a Games participant.
VAS will be celebrating its 20th Anniversary this year by hosting the Coventry Commonwealth Games in Roanoke and other regions of the state including Bedford County, Charlottesville, Danville, Richmond, Northern Virginia, Waynesboro, and the New River Valley. Opening ceremonies will be held at the Roanoke Civic Center on Friday night, July 17. This year the celebration will include an Olympic speaker and a concert immediately following the opening ceremonies.
Over the past 19 years, more than 161,000 athletes have competed in the Games. This year 10,000 athletes are expected to participate in 61 sports. The economic impact on the Roanoke Valley is estimated to be nearly four million dollars. During our 20 year history, the Coventry Commonwealth Games and other events that VAS has hosted has had an approximate 65-70 million dollars economic impact on the region.
