FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Springfield, VA – On June 6, 2009, Fairfax County will be hosting the second annual Virginia State High School Rugby Championship. The event will be held at South County Secondary School.

The event will bring boys and girls from all over the state together in the pursuit of fair play, teamwork and the championship. I know from personal experience how the game of rugby teaches the value of teamwork, courage, and discipline –traits that will serve these young people well over the course of their lives.

In recognition of the significance of this high school rugby championship at the May 4, 2009 meeting of the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors the Board declared June 6, 2009 “Rugby Day” in Fairfax County. Supervisor Herrity will present a proclamation from the Board at the championship.

“We should be proud that Rugby Virginia and their sponsor the Virginia National Guard have selected our county for the second year in a row to host the Rugby State Championship. It is a testament to the quality of the facilities and resources that we have here, as well as the kind of organizations that we attract because of our commitment to our youth and youth sports,” said Supervisor Pat Herrity.

“I played Rugby when I was in high school and I am pleased to see that the sport has grown so much that we now have an official high school state championship.  Anytime we can expand access to athletic programs it’s a good thing,” added Herrity.

Rugby Virginia’s Executive Director, Frederic Bardot added, “We are honored that Fairfax County, through the leadership of Supervisor Pat Herrity, is again recognizing the athletic achievement of our boys and girls rugby players, who are competing at the Virginia High School State Championship at South County’s wonderful facility in Lorton.”
