Fairfax, VA (June 6, 2010) – Rugby Virginia is pleased to announce that its High School Championship day was officially proclaimed "Rugby Day" in the City of Alexandria, Virginia, by Mayor William Euille and the Alexandria City Council.

The 3rd Rugby Virginia High School Rugby State Championship was contested on June 5, 2010 at Parker-Gray Memorial Stadium, T.C. Williams High School, Alexandria, VA and saw its largest attendance to-date.

On the day that saw high quality rugby, 3 State titles were decided: The first match of the day saw a re-match of last year’s girls final as Western Loudoun played Fairfax Police Youth Club (FPYC).  In a back and forth game, the Fairfax girls ultimately prevailed by a score of 24-15.

In the D2 boys match, Menchville High School, the Peninsula Conference Champion from Newport News VA was playing the D2 Northern Conference Champion, Western Loudoun.  After being down 7-3 at the half, Menchville tied the game at 10-10 in the second half to send the game into overtime.   In overtime, Menchville prevailed in a kick-at-goal contest by a score of 4-3.

In the final match of the day, the D1 boys contest pitted returning finalist SYC West End against undefeated Fairfax Police Youth Club (FPYC).  Defense took the upper hand as no tries were scored in the match.  In an MVP performance, SYC West End fly half Joe Eustace kicked all the points for his team to prevail by a score of 18-9.

“It was a memorable day” said Rugby Virginia’s Executive Director, Frederic Bardot. “Despite the heat we saw great contests, good noisy crowds for all the matches, and new Champions.  We cannot wait until next year as more clubs will be added to the competition.”

Rugby Virginia wants to acknowledge the great support provided by the T.C. Williams High School Rugby Boosters Club, the T.C. coaches and players who helped make the event a success. Also our program partners: Virginia Army National Guard, World Rugby Shop, Rising Star Imaging and BBC Studios video production.

The Girls Championship is a rematch of the 2009 championship won by Western Loudoun.

The Boys Division II Championship sees Menchville High School (Newport News) returning to the title match as defending Peninsula Conference Champions. Their opponent will be the winner of this Saturday’s (May 29) match between Western Loudoun, the 2009 Division I Champion and Langley McLean, one of the original U-19 rugby programs in Virginia (over 30 years old).

The Boys Division I Championship pits 2009 Division I finalist Springfield Youth Club / West End (SYC/WE) versus surging Fairfax Police Youth Club (FPYC). These teams gained the final from the same division (East) of the Northern Conference.

Rugby Virginia owes a lot of its success to its partner and championship title sponsor, the Virginia National Guard.  “The Virginia’s National Guard association with Virginia high school rugby is positive.  Rugby players are dedicated and hard working athletes.  We look forward to see this year’s Championship” said SFC Steven Koptchak from the Virginia National Guard.

Last year, torrential rains threatened cancellation of the Championship until T.C. Williams Rugby stepped up at the 11th hour to host at their field turf surface facility. T.C. Boys went on to capture their first ever Division II Championship.

T.C. Director of Rugby and Boys Head Coach, Jeff Murphy reflected on this year and last:  â€œThe T.C Williams High School Rugby Club is grateful for the opportunity to partner with our league, Rugby Virginia, and to host this year’s High School Rugby State Championships. As a club sport at T.C., we receive no funds from our school, and just like the varsity sports at T.C., we impose no financial barriers or dues on our student-athletes that may prevent their participation; therefore, we must explore every other opportunity to raise money so that we can continue our program’s growth and development for our girls and boys. Fortunately, our school—the only high school in the Commonwealth of Virginia with both a boys and a girls team, recognizes T.C. Rugby as an official club and supports us by providing on-campus facilities that, ultimately, allows us to partner with and receive a donation from Rugby VA for use of as well as hosting in our historic Parker-Gray Stadium. And although neither of our teams qualified for States this year, our goal is to provide all our guests of the Championship with a first-class rugby experience, worthy of the game we love.
